Lodging
Edelweiss Haus two-bedroom condominiums. Book 4 nights
(Sat-Wed or Wed-Sun) or all 8 nights. There is an option to add
additional nights at the beginning and/or end of our stay at a
reduced rate. Typical bedding in each two-bedroom
unit is a twin bed in a shared room for single folks and a queen in the master bedroom for couples. Yes, it's a bit nicer and pricier
than usual for us, but if we get the optimum mix for full use of the
space, we'll rebate some of the lodging price. Each unit has a gas
fireplace in the living room and a fully-equipped kitchen. The property has on-site check-in from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM and late
check-in at 375 Saddle View Way from 10:00 PM to 8:00 AM. Also free
parking, outdoor heated pool, hot tub, exercise and coin-op laundry
facilities, complimentary media center located in the lobby with
Internet access and wireless capability. You must book through the
SIG to get the discounted prices! Note that you must provide a
credit card imprint to the lodging company at check-in for the $125
damage deposit. Edelweiss Haus is at 1482 Empire Ave., Park City,
Utah 84060, 435-649-9342, 435-649-4049 (fax).
Skiing Park City
From Ski Magazine: "Rated: #5 'If hosting the 2002 Salt Lake Olympics was Park
City's gold-medal moment,
making it into the Top Five in this year's survey could be its Wheaties-box afterglow. Not much has changed since the pre-Games
spruce-up: a lift replacement here, new grooming equipment there, but Park City is generating more national buzz, vaulting up four places
since last year. (You know a resort is moving up when readers whine
about "too much fur!") With almost a thousand direct flights
arriving
daily at nearby SLC airport, Park City is still "painless to get to
from pretty much anywhere." The skiing can be pretty painless as
well, with 50 percent grooming and plenty of that famous Wasatch
light 'n' white 485 inches last season. (One confused reader
complained of "too much snow at once." We wish we felt your
pain,
buddy.) Some readers gripe that the area's seven peaks are "not steep
enough" and are overrun with "too many blues." Maybe. While
Park City
ain't Alta, there is plenty of expert terrain upon which to huck,
bump and bruise yourself starting with four wildly popular terrain
parks. If you fear a hike to the "sweet bowls" off Jupiter Peak,
try
the "great tree skiing" off the Thaynes and McConkey's lifts.
(Another FYI for the hardcores: They don't call it the Ski Team lift
for nothing.) Sure, the "on-mountain food is mediocre," but when
you
compare it to what's available on Main Street downtown from the Easy
Street Brasserie at one end up to the Wasatch Brew Pub at the other we're not surprised. Here's a hint: Head down Quit'n Time for
lunch at one of the former mining town's No. 7-rated dining options,
then ride the Town Lift back to cruisers under the Payday lift. Or,
of course, you could start your party early in town, "which
ROCKS!"
and which is responsible for the resort's No. 7 Après ranking. Or
head to any of Park City's No. 5-rated off-hill activities: Try
tubing at Gorgoza Park, skating at the base village rink, or ski-jump
fantasy camp at the Olympic Park. Personalized Wheaties box not
included.' Philip Higgs"
Skiing Later
Lifts open at 9 AM, some close at 4 PM, but some stay
open as late as 7:30 PM!
Skiing Stats
Base: 6,900 feet; Summit: 10,000 feet; 3,300 Acres,
spread over seven peaks and nine bowls; 100 Trails: 18 Easier, 44 More Difficult, 38 Most Difficult;
Longest Run: Homerun, 3.5 miles
long; 14 Lifts: 4 high-speed six-passenger chairs, 2 high-speed quads,
4 triples, 4 doubles; Uphill Capacity: 27,200 guests per hour;
Average Annual Snowfall: 355 inches; Average Monthly Temperature in
Feb: 35°F.; Snowmaking: 475 acres (summit to base).
More Skiing
There's a free shuttle service to the nearby resorts of
Deer Valley (rated #1 by Ski Magazine!) and The Canyons. Some folks
staying for the full week plan some day-tripping.
Not Skiing
Non-skiers are welcome - many other activities are
available. Even cross-country skiers are welcome and sometimes get a
group together. :) But expect most people to be there for the
downhill alpine skiing!
Hospitality
Each morning we meet for a light fix-it-yourself
breakfast. Don't expect a proper fry-up. Après ski we
generally
have beer, wine, soft drinks, and light snacks. Hospitality hours are
typically 7:30-8:30 AM (or when everyone's gone skiing) and 4:30-6:30
PM (or when everyone's gone to dinner). You are free to participate
with the group or not, as you wish. We'll have a Super Bowl Party on
February 4 - you can join the party or ski the empty slopes instead!
Meals
No meals other than light breakfast are included, but pasta
may appear some nights. We typically go to one or more restaurants
after après-ski hospitality. There is always a vegetarian group and
others form as necessary. Of course, you can just use the kitchen in
your condo.
Rates
Day rates $8/day in advance, $10/day at the door without
lodging. $440 for four nights, $860 for eight nights. $200 deposit to hold
space; balance due 11/10/06. Partial refunds after 11/10 subject to resale
of space. Meal plan (7) included. Room rates guaranteed until 11/10. Book
through Ski SIG for low group rates. Checks payable to "Ski SIG."
Lift Tickets
Daily price at the window is likely to be about
$74. We have negotiated group prices of $49 to $55 per day,
depending on the number of days you purchase and how many days the
group as a whole buys. We have to pay for the tickets a couple of
weeks before, but can sometimes add days on arrival. Lift tickets
are good for x of 7 days, such as 3 days out of a 7-day period. We
have arrangements for some flexibility on the 7-day period for those
of you staying longer. Although there have been requests for deals
for other resorts, we can only manage group discounts for Park
City. Note that the more skiers in our group, the cheaper the prices
for everyone, so please book with the rest of us!
Ski Rental/Lessons
There's a 20% discount with our lodging. Ski
rental and lessons can easily be arranged after you arrive.
Getting There
You are responsible for getting yourself there and
back. Salt Lake City International Airport (code SLC) is only 34
miles away and has nearly 1000 flights per day. Hotel/Airport
shuttle $68. Several shuttle
services operate between SLC and Park City. See below for WWW sites
with transport info. Check-in details above under Lodging.
Getting Around
Free Transit System: "Where do you want to go in our
beautiful little town? Main Street for a little shopping or a bite to
eat? The Canyons Resort, Deer Valley Resort or Park City Mountain
Resort for a great day of powder? Maybe a little snowshoeing?
Wherever you're headed, the Park City Transit system is the best way
to get there. From 7:30 AM until 10:30 PM every day, our buses will
take you just about anywhere you need to go. And you don't have to
pay to ride. The best things in life are free. There's also the Main
Street Trolley Service which operates daily from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM.
The Trolley serves as a connection between Old Town Transit Center
and Main Street. We welcome you aboard to enjoy a ride through the
Historic District."
Parking
Free parking is available at Edelweiss Haus, but you should
really think about why you would need a car there!
E-mail Lists

transportation, coordinate other details, ask questions or just talk
snow. There are two: 1) "skisig-announce" is for
announcements only
(low traffic), and 2) "skisig-talk" is for discussion (can get a
bit
chatty). To subscribe, go to http://www.lists.us.mensa.org/mailman/listinfo/skisig-announce
